Education vs. Experience

Many of you may have seen paragraphs like this on a job search from USAjobs.gov.  I think it says something very interesting about the government’s value of education in comparison with experience:

GS-11: One year of experience directly related to the occupation equivalent to at least the next lower grade level; or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M., if related; or equivalent combinations of experience and education.

You read it right, these things are considered equal: “one year of experience directly related to the occupation” or a Ph.D.  Or, if you’re on the legal side of the house, an LL.M. (which typically comes after you’ve completed your 3 year J.D.).

Remind me again why I’m in graduate school?  Instead, I could have done 2 years of experience “directly related to the occupation” and been the equivalent of having 2 Ph.D.s!
